With summer on its way, water experts are holding an free information day for boaties this Saturday.

Local Harbour Masters and Wardens will be at most boat ramps in the Western Bay offering advice and tips, as well as small giveaways for those who display correct behaviours and equipment.

The experts will arrive first thing in the morning and spend a couple of hours at the boat ramps.

Tauranga Harbour Master Jennifer Roberts said the day was an opportunity to speak to people at the beginning of the busy summer boating season about what navigation safety bylaws may be in place in certain areas.

It would also give boaties an opportunity to ask questions and meet their local Harbour Wardens and Harbour Masters.

"We're happy to speak to people about things they can do to make their day on the water safer and it's great to see so many people out enjoying our harbours and the ocean,'' she said.

Experts will be at the Sulphur Point ramp from 5am while most other boat ramps in the Western Bay of Plenty will be manned from 6am on Saturday, October 20.

The Waihi Beach ramp at Pio Shores will be visited by experts from 2pm on Sunday, October 21, to coincide with a fishing competition and high tide.
