Rena debris turned into artwork and story

A timber structure resembling a giant game of Jenga was the novel way locals chose to tidy up Rena debris washed up at Orokawa Bay, just north of Waihi Beach.

A series of 36 photos of the destruction of the estimated two-storey high artwork have been posted on Facebook by user Matt Griffiths.

Each photo is tagged with a caption that, when read in sequence, creates a children's story titled Demolition of the giant Jenga. "A Seagull's view of the Rena Salvage Diver's day at the office".

Since it was posted on Tuesday, the story has already been shared by 13 people, liked by seven and 10 people have left comments including, "fantastic bedtime story" and: "Excellent story, I can see it going viral if you get it on Youtube."

Bay of Plenty Times reader Graeme Nicholas, who lives at Waihi Beach, said the container washed up several weeks ago and prior to the artwork being created the timber had been strewn all over the beach.

"The logs are huge and would be a challenge to be lifted by one person and the structure must be at least two storeys high," he said. Maritime New Zealand spokesman Ross Henderson said the timber at Orokawa Bay was towed to a waiting barge on Tuesday and the container would be cut up and removed in the near future.
