Our top story for 2012 was the tale of the Waikato cheerleaders who were told their services were not needed for Fieldays this year. The girls were stumped as to why they were being given the cold shoulder.

Sadly 2012 proved to be a deadly year on Waikato roads, in September a tourist who was honeymooning with her husband was killed after their hire car hit a truck at a deadly intersection near the Waitomo caves. The husband was later charged over the crash.
At number eight was Mila the elephant, which killed its keeper at Franklin Zoo, heading to a new home in the United States.
The slightly creepy story of toys made from possum bones was our ninth biggest story of the year.
Rounding out our top ten, a new Hamilton policy banning smoking was given the thumbs up by smokers, but many said they were not clear where the ban covered.
