Our top stories online for 2012

We take a look back at some of our most popular stories online for 2012.

Our top story for 2012 was the tale of the Waikato cheerleaders who were told their services were not needed for Fieldays this year. The girls were stumped as to why they were being given the cold shoulder.

At number two was stripper Shard McNeill who took on "prudish" New Zealand in a video blog explaining the stripping industry.

Hamilton lass Kimbra has been in the news all year as her international profile goes from strength to strength. She wowed US critics with her performance in our third most-viewed story.

In fourth spot was the news that Waikato plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers will be charged new licensing and registration fees.

To celebrate his impending100th birthday, Bob Moorfield took delivery of a new All Wheel Drive Forester - making him most probably the oldest Subaru driver in New Zealand.

The sixth biggest story of the year was the tragic news that a motorcyclist had died in a crash on SH23.

Sadly 2012 proved to be a deadly year on Waikato roads, in September a tourist who was honeymooning with her husband was killed after their hire car hit a truck at a deadly intersection near the Waitomo caves. The husband was later charged over the crash.

At number eight was  Mila the elephant, which killed its keeper at Franklin Zoo, heading to a new home in the United States.

The slightly creepy story of toys made from possum bones was our ninth biggest story of the year.

Rounding out our top ten, a new Hamilton policy banning smoking was given the thumbs up by smokers, but many said they were not clear where the ban covered.
