Gyrocopter off runway and into harbour

UPDATED: 2.27pm.

Two men walked from the water after their gyrocopter crashed into the habour today.

About 1.30pm today, the two men were in the process of taking off when the gyrocopter lost power at 500 feet, police said.

The men are believed to be in their 60s.

The gyrocopter and the two men landed in the shallows, about 200 metres from the end of the runway.

One of the men has been taken to Tauranga Hospital as a precaution but it is understood neither were seriously injured in the crash.

Police said the incident had been passed to the CAA for investigation.

EARLIER:

Emergency services are at the airport and below the Harbour Bridge as a gyrocopter went off the end of the runway and crashed into the water about 1.45pm.

Police said two people were in shallow water. They are not believed to be injured.
