He went to Delhi last year as our first Greco-Roman wrestler but 23-year-old Sam Belkin is contemplating a mid-career switch in styles to prolong his international career.
Belkin finished fourth in Delhi in Greco-Roman, losing two of his three bouts, but with Greco unlikely to be on the cards for Glasgow in 2013 he's putting more emphasis on improving his freestyle.
The ancient sport of Greco-Roman wrestling dates back to the first modern Olympics and, unlike freestyle, forbids holds below the waist, putting an emphasis on upper body strength.
Belkin competed at the weekend's national wrestling and grappling championships at the new TECT Arena at Mount Maunganui for the host club after his Crichton Cobbers club in Christchurch was wrecked in February's earthquake. The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janiero are the main goal rather than London next year for Belkin, who is considerably younger than most of his competition.
"I was only 22 last year in Delhi, and most of my competition was way above my age. In my weight class you generally don't peak until you're in your 30s and the muscle mass comes on."
Belkin won three golds at the weekend - 96kg and 120kg Greco-Roman and 96kg freestyle - and said a more permanent shift into freestyle looking ahead to the next Commonwealth Games wasn't a massive stretch.
"They're still arguing about whether Greco should be included in Glasgow but it seems unlikely. I wrestle freestyle anyway, and even though it hasn't been my chosen style I'll make the move if it gives me greater options."
The Canterbury University sports student, who emigrated to New Zealand with his parents as an 11-year-old, dipped out to Canadian and Australian rivals before beating a Solomon Islands opponent in Delhi. Now he's had a taste, he wants more.
Belkin prepared for Delhi with six weeks in Russia and returned to Europe earlier this year, training just north of Budapest for 2 months.
"In New Zealand I have one or two training partners in Christchurch. In Russia there was a club of 400 people so training with a different person each day was great, and in Hungary I wrestled most days with a couple of guys who were ranked second in the world in Greco.
"After the earthquake, where our gym was demolished, we've pretty much been nomads, training anywhere that'll take us, so it was nice to go away and get some competition."
Belkin's road to London is paved with numerous obstacles, not least the cost which may top $10,000. He has to finish in the top two at next year's Oceania champs in Aussie and do the same at the African Cup in Morocco.
Mount Maunganui's Megan Candler also won three medals at the weekend - two in grappling and one in freestyle - with her achievement bettered by grappler Kate Aroa, who won the 67kg freestyle gold and won two grappling titles.
Katikati's Ryan McCormick (32kg), Ronin Ainsley (35kg) and Tyler Corbett (38kg and 47kg) dominated the 12-13 years male freestyle division, with Mount's Merinda Bramley winning gold in the female 12-13 years freestyle.
Katikati's Mitchel Harvey filled his pockets, winning the 96kg 14-16 years freestyle gold, 84kg junior gold and greco titles in 96kg and 120kg, with Katikati's Brook White winning the 60kg junior male Greco.
Mount's Kellyn Chapman won the 46-50kg junior male freestyle, Caylen Greenwood (Katikati) 74kg gold and Mount's Marshall Gibson 120kg gold.
