Girl hit by car outside Katikati Primary

A 7-year-old girl has been hit by a car out side Katikati Primary School.

Katikati police constable Peter Krom said the girl received some "pretty good'' scrapes and bruises.

"Her mum was holding on to her but it sounds like she's just broken loose and run out into the road.''

She actually ran into the side of the car, Mr Krom said.

He said the driver of the car could see what was happening and had slowed right down.

``Once again, young kids take care and mums hold on tight.''

Police were called to the scene at 3pm.

The girl was taken to Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries.

The Katikati Advertiser has spoken to school principal, Andrea Nicholson, who said the child had been collected from school by her mother and they were walking together on Beach Rd towards St Peter's Church.

"The youngster was standing with her mother waiting to cross the road when she stepped off the pavement into a passing car."

Mrs Nicholson said she was happy that the child was going to be alright. In the four years since she has been principal, there had been no traffic or road incidents.
