Gas leak in Te Puke

A digger has struck and ruptured a gas pipe in Te Puke.

The incident happened about 9.40am at the intersection of Boucher Ave and Oxford St.

Tauranga police senior sergeant Carl Purcell said a digger had ruptured a gas main.

He said Boucher Ave was currently blocked and cars were being diverted down neaby roads.

It is understood houses in the immediate area are being evacuated.

Mr Purcell advised motorists in the area to drive with caution.

Firefighters are at the scene.
