Elderly residents at Cedar Manor were evacuated after a gas leak outside the retirement village this morning.

Fire crews from Tauranga and Mt Maunganui were called to Sixth Ave about 8.30am.

North communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said there was a leak in a domestic gas line, which ``wasn't too major'', as the gas pipe was relatively small.

The gas leak was found outside of Cedar Manor, between the hospital and the villages.

A fireman from the Tauranga brigade said Cedar Manor staff moved some residents from their rooms to the other side of the building, away from the gas leak.

It took about an hour before the gas leak was isolated and the area was cordoned off.

Mr Phillips said contractors were on site to fix the problem.

It is unclear what caused the gas pipe to leak.
