Greerton firefighters attended two suspicious fires in Gate Pa on Saturday. The first was a scrub fire in Sherson St at 4.26pm, where locals assisted in putting the 3m by 6m fire out. And the second was a rubbish fire in Anzac Park on Anzac Rd at 10pm.

It is not known if the two fires are related.

Smoke from a hangi pit in the backyard of a house in Sunset Crescent, Maungatapu, caused neighbours to call firefighters on Saturday evening.

Greerton firefighters checked on the pit and found everything to be fine.

Residents who hauled their old mattress out on to the side of Hynds Rd got rid of it quicker than they thought, when someone set it alight. Greerton firefighters put on the fire early Saturday.

Firefighters also have had their first political casualty over the weekend, with the burning of a National billboard. The billboard, with a picture of prime minister John Key, was set alight on the corner of Hampton Tce and Fraser St on Saturday night.
