UPDATED: 4.40pm:

A 46-year-old man has died after an accident at the intersection of Pyes Pa Rd and Mangatoi Rd, near the TECT All Terrain Park.

Western Bay road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the Mitsubishi van he was driving struck an embankment at 12.53pm.

He was the sole occupant of the car.

Mr Campion said no road closure was necessary and there was no disruption to traffic flows.

Police enquiries are continuing and crash analysts attended the scene.

Details of the deceased  will not be released until members of the family have been notified, he said.

 

Earlier:

Emergency services are at the scene of a fatal car accident in rural Pyes Pa.

One person has died after an accident at the intersection of Pyes Pa Rd and Mangatoi Rd, near the TECT All Terrain Park.

A police Inspector from Northern Communications confirmed one person had died at the scene.

The Inspector said the call came through about 12.53pm.

He said initial reports was that the vehicle involved was a 4x4, but it could also have been a light truck or van.

The inspector said it appeared the vehicle had left the road and hit a rock face.

It is unclear if any other vehicles were involved in the crash, he said.

The Serious Crash Unit has been called to the scene.

A Tauranga police spokesperson said the road is cleared and open in both directions.
