Kittens, kittens everywhere but not a bed to sleep.

Tauranga SPCA is so overloaded with animals it is holding a sale to relieve pressure on the Greerton shelter.

Western Bay animal-welfare inspector Tania Brook said  it was the most  animals they'd had at the shelter "for a long time".

"Lack of space is a huge issue and we don't want to overcrowd the animals because that's when they get sick," said Ms Brook.

About 60 cats and kittens  call the shelter home at the moment. That number does not include  animals  cared for in foster homes.

Most of the puppies at the SPCA are  being looked after by foster families. That came after an outbreak of  parvovirus about three weeks ago.

Ms Brook said the large number of animals at the shelter could be  a result of three things - the time of year, an increasing number of strays and the fact many cats had not been de-sexed.

 The sale will run  for the next two weeks. The SPCA will even open this Sunday from 10am-2pm to accommodate demands.

The SPCA is offering a 20 per cent discount on all pets from today until Saturday, March 20.
