An elderly woman was taken to hospital after she was hit by a reversing car in a Katikati carpark.

The woman is thought to have broken her ankle but was otherwise unscathed in the accident, which happened about
11.40am today.

Katikati St John team manager Dick Megchelse said the woman had been standing in an empty carpark then moved to stand behind another vehicle as a car turned into the empty space.

Then the car she was standing behind began to reverse and didn't see the woman standing there, and knocked the woman over, he said.

"It was very low speed and her injuries were very minor,'' he said.

"She had an ankle injury so we took her to Tauranga Hospital."
