An elderly man heading towards Pukehina is reported to have suffered a medical episode and crashed into a fence in Pongakawa.

The crash took place about 3pm near the intersection of state highways 2 and 33.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said a 78-year-old Auckland man was driving to Pukehina when he allegedly became dizzy and ran off the left hand side of the road striking about seven or eight fence posts.

Mr Campion said the man suffered no other injuries and no other vehicle was involved.

Police officers are at the scene.
