Two pre-teen swimmers had spectators cheering madly at Baywave last night as they blitzed their competition and broke 13 records in total.

Paige Schendelaar-Kemp, Year 7, from Bucklands Beach Intermediate, swam 10 individual events and won every race, breaking 8 records.Wilrich Coetzee, Year 8 from Northcross Intermediate, swam 12 individual events and won 10 - he was second in other two races - breaking five records.

Swimming co-ordinator Freda Delaney, said the swimmers showed "wonderful talent" and made for exceptional viewing as they sliced through the water at speed.

"Paige, she broke nine records on Monday night in the heats, then re-broke eight last night. She's in a league of her own. She's a little dynamo," she said.

Mrs Delaney said Paige followed the lead of AIMS swimming champ Michael Mincham, who in 2008, achieved the same kind of domination that Michael Phelps did in Beijing that year.

The Year 7 student from Glen Eden grabbed an extraordinary 10 individual titles, drawing comparisons with the eight golds Phelps won at the Olympic Games.

Mrs Delaney said swimming was a "self-motivating sport."

"For these young kids to do well, they must have an inner drive to do it."

She said it was her goal to convince Swim New Zealand to start recognising and using AIMS swimming times, in national events.

In spite of inclement weather conditions at Blake Park, the football front-runners from last year continued to shine at this year's tournament.

Defending girls' champions Auckland Normal continued their winning ways, defeating Aquinas College 8-0 on the second day of the football tournament. On the opening day, the defending champions posted three solid wins.

Boys' title-holders Palmerston North Intermediate, who had to settle for two draws on the first day, got their title defence back on track, dispatching Pukekohe 9-0.

2008 champions Northcross Intermediate are looking in ominous form in the boys' division.

After two big wins on the opening day, last year's silver medallists defeated Blockhouse Bay 3-0 and Glen Eden 4-0.

Rugby Sevens, which made its NZCT AIMS Games entrance yesterday, provided non-stop action at the Tauranga Domain. At the close of play on day one, a number of schools had posted unbeaten records.

In section one, Tauranga and Whangarei intermediates grabbed four wins and will meet in the last round of round-robin play this morning, with the top qualifying spot at stake.

A similar scenario will take place in section two, where both Mount Maunganui and Kawerau finished with four wins apiece.

Western Bay school Otumoetai Intermediate and Auckland's Royal Oak Intermediate also ended day one with unbeaten records.

In the badminton boys' doubles, Berkley Normal had double medal success, claiming both the gold and bronze medals.

In the gold medal decider, the first set went down to the wire before Ben Rose and Chris Steeghs held their nerve against E.J. Broens and Anthony Chang (Murrays Bay) to win 24-22.

The second set proved more comfortable for the top seeds, who posted a comfortable victory to clinch the gold medal.

Berkley also took out the bronze medal match when Josh Beattie and Mathew Graham dispatched Daniel Thomsen and Kevin Gee from Havelock North in a tight three-set encounter. With both the bronze medallists in year seven, they look outstanding prospects for next year.

With the rain falling at the start of play, there was no need to water the turf at the Tauranga Hockey Centre.

One of the outstanding games on day two was the boys' match-up between Tauranga Intermediate and Rudolf Steiner (Tauranga) School.

In what turned out to be a hard-fought encounter, the final nil-all draw reflected a game that was action-packed throughout.

The top 16 teams that will contest the netball championship have emerged after two days of qualifying play.

Five teams have gone through the preliminary rounds unbeaten - Auckland schools Murrays Bay and Glen Eden, along with Te Puke, have been joined by Heaton and Northcross intermediates from the South Island.

Two schools that made their debut at the games this year have also made the cut.

Blockhouse Bay and Newlands both look genuine contenders.
