Dead fish 'not poisoned'

Hundreds of dead fish floating at low tide on the shoreline near two stormwater drains alongside Otumoetai's Daisy Hardwick boardwalk on Thursday was not the result of poisoning.

That's the result of an investigation by Tauranga City Council and the regional council.

Tauranga City Council pollution prevention officer Toby Barach said both councils had investigated the deaths and the dead fish were smelt, which had probably succumbed to either a change in water temperature, or oxygen levels, as there was no evidence of poisoning.

Mr Barach said this is not an uncommon occurrence and the dead fish have since been removed. Anyone who sees large quantities of dead fish should ring the regional council's pollution hotline 0800 884 883 or call Tauranga City Council on 577 7000.
