A Hamilton dairy farmer will be sentenced today on animal cruelty charges.

Logan Joel Dawson pleaded guilty to charges laid under the Animal Welfare Act by the SPCA and will face his sentence in Hamilton District Court.

He has been charged with baiting an animal, and another of ill-treating an animal, a first-time charge of this kind to be used in New Zealand.

The charges relate to using pigs that were held captive on his farm to train dogs at his property.

The charges come after he set his dogs on penned pigs and posted it on YouTube in March 2011.
