A Gate Pa teenager who attacked and beat a man unconscious after the victim refused to give his associate a cigarette has been warned to prepare himself for a likely jail sentence.
Turiarangi Tai, 18, pleaded guilty to one count of injuring with intent to injure in Tauranga District Court yesterday.
The charge relates to an attack on the victim in Cameron Rd about 1pm on October 20, 2011 after the man was approached and asked for cigarette, but refused the request.
When the victim tried to flee, Tai punched him at least twice in the face, then the victim was kicked, punched in the head and body before he was struck with a road worker's street sign.
During the attack the victim lost consciousness and the next thing he recalled was walking up in Tauranga Hospital having sustained a broken nose, black eyes, a cut to his forehead and bruising.
Tai who is on bail will be sentenced on October 26.

A Tauranga man has admitted he repeatedly assaulted his teenage daughter during an 18-month period.
Morris Johnson Allen, 36, pleaded guilty to two counts of male assaults female, one of the charges is a representative charge in Tauranga District Court yesterday.
The offences occurred between September 2, 2010 and March 2. On the last occasion on March 2 when the 15-year-old returned home Allen yelled and swore at her, before he slapped her across the face. Allen, who is on bail, will be sentenced on October 26 following a restorative justice meeting.

A Mount Maunganui man accused of committing thousands of dollars worth of burglaries and thefts will defend the allegations at trial. Ben Te Maro, 25, appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday and denied three charges of burglary and two charges of theft.
Court documents reveal that police allege Te Maro stole a $10,000 boat and trailer, a large quantity of items from a caravan and also burgled three houses in Rotorua between February 25 and March 7.
The property allegedly taken in the burglaries is valued at more than $20,000. Te Maro, who is being held in custody is due back in court on September 27 to confirm a trial date.
