A  child was taken to hospital this morning after falling from a second-storey window.

A St John Communications spokeswoman said crews were called about 7.15am to reports of a child falling from a second storey window in the Rotorua suburb of Fordlands.

The 14-month-old girl had minor to moderate injuries and was taken to Rotorua Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said the girl was being kept in hospital for observations. She said police were currently examining the scene which included speaking with the adults at the house.

In a statement this afternoon police said the toddler was still in hospital and her condition was described as well and stable.

The statement said initial enquiries indicated the girl climbed through the upstairs window falling onto a grass area below.

The investigation is continuing.
