A front-runner for Tauranga's "cheapest home" is still for sale.

Greerton man Philip Hayward said his Mansels Rd property was still up for grabs and still, in his opinion, the cheapest three-bedroom house in Tauranga.

The former state house was being sold privately for $171,000. Now it's $172,000.

The Bay of Plenty Times ran a story on Mr Hayward and his seriously cheap digs last month.

Since then the self-confessed eccentric has received an offer.

"This guy saw the article and he'd glanced at it. Then he saw the sign and he came out straightaway with an offer.

"That guy shook my hand. He came back with his parents. I think they put him off. He never came back after that."

Mr Hayward said the father appeared unimpressed with people in the area but d the house had good neighbours, a valley outlook and was in good nick.

The property can be viewed at 160a Mansels Rd.
