Updated 3.46pm:

The occupants of two cars trapped under fallen powerlines in Te Puke are being removed.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Ian Campion said the power company had arrived and were removing people from the cars.

He said the powerlines had fallen down across two parked cars. Two people were reported to be inside each of the vehicles.

Mr Campion said he did not yet know why the powerlines had fallen down as no crash had been reported.

 

Earlier:

Two cars are trapped under power lines which have come down on Macloughlin Drive in Te Puke.

Fire service northern communications shift manager Scott Osmond said people were understood to inside the cars.

Mr Osmond said he was not sure how the power lines had come down or if there had been an accident,

Police and the fire service are at the scene.
