The fire service had to use rescue equipment to free a person from a smashed vehicle after an accident near Waihi this morning.

A spokesperson from Northern Fire Communications said a car collided with a tree near Waihi at 11.37am.

The spokesperson said a person was trapped and the fire service had to use rescue equipment to release them from the vehicle.

The person involved in the car has been taken to Tauranga Hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services have left the scene.
