Crashes keep emergency services busy

Police and ambulance staff have been called to a multi-car crash in Mount Maunganui.

Police Northern Communications shift manager Senior Sergeant Chris Money said four or five cars needed to be towed from a nose-to-tail accident on Maunganui Rd near Tweed St.

Police were called to the accident about 2.10pm.

One woman was reported to have an injured knee.

Two cars were blocking the road.

Meanwhile, police and St John officers were called to a crash in Katikati about 2.30pm.

Mr Money said a car was upside down on State Highway 2 near the Rustic Pumpkin Cafe.

The man was out of the car which was blocking the road.

Only one car was involved.

He was believed to have minor injuries.

A crash in the Karangakake Gorge earlier today was also reported just before noon today, which caused delays for people travelling between Paeroa and Waihi. 

Earlier today, around 11.am, an elderly woman was killed when she was knocked over by a car reversing out of a driveway on Windsor Rd in Otumoetai.
