Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in a car crash in the Lower Kaimais this afternoon.

Two women were taken to Tauranga Hospital after their car rolled.

The car, with the two women inside, was heading up Poripori Rd towards SH29 when it lost control and crashed.

The vehicle rolled three or four times before it ended up right way up crashed into a bank.

Mount Maunganui St John operations team manager Gary Bishell said only two women were in the vehicle when it crashed.

He said a 23-year-old Te Puke woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries and a 40-year-old local woman was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

Police Senior Constable Bruce Gordon said he believed speed and alcohol were factors.
