Police are searching for a group of people who attacked a man and hijacked his car.

Tauranga Senior Sergeant Mark Holmes said the aggravated robbery took place near Te Puke last night.

"A gentleman picked up some people and gave them a ride a when they got there they assaulted him and stole his car."

Mr Holmes said the attack occured on Rangiuru Rd in Waitangi.

He did not believe the man was badly injured.

No arrests have been made and the Tauranga CIB are investigating the incident.
