The driver of a car that clipped a bank, hit a concrete barrier and rolled on a state highway last night is recovering today in Tauranga Hospital.

The 48-year-old Christchurch man was treated by St John ambulance after crashing his car along the SH29 Maungatapu to Te Maunga causeway at 6.05pm yesterday.

A St Johns spokesman said the man suffered moderate head and chest injuries and was taken to hospital for further treatment.

"He was travelling along and clipped a wall, lost control of his vehicle and clipped the concrete median barrier and rolled the vehicle and hit the bank," the spokesman said.

The man was the only occupant in the vehicle.
