UPDATED: 12.50pm

Emergency services have responded to a car crash on Welcome Bay Rd at around midday today.

It is understood the two elderly occupants of the car were initially trapped in the vehicle but they have both been freed by firefighters.

They have been taken to Tauranga Hospital with what is believed to be minor injuries.

A reporter at the scene said a car was tipped upside down just outside the parking space of the Welcome Bay Tavern and bottle store, behind the Caltex service station.

The car was driving towards Welcome Bay Rd from the top car park but lost control and flipped.

It's not clear at this moment why the car veered off the road.
