A bus has hit a van in Te Puna this morning.

The bus scraped the side of a van that was pulling out of a driveway by Te Puna Village just after 7.30am.

Police said the driver of the Toyota van suffered minor injuries, while the bus driver and four passengers were left unscathed.

The bus, which was driving to Tauranga, swerved to miss the van but clipped it.

Senior Sergeant Ian Campion was not sure if the bus was a school bus but said it was "a small bus''.

He urged drivers to take extreme care turning out of driveways and intersections on State Highway 2.

"The majority of crashes on State Highway 2, between Bethlehem and Athenree, involved intersections or driveways.

"Everyone who's exiting a driveway or intersection needs to make sure the path is clear. The potential for injury or worse  with a t-bone type crash is extremely high.''
