A new Burger King is set to be built near Tauranga Primary School on Cameron Rd.

Antares Restaurant Group Limited, owners of Burger King, have been granted resource consent to built a new fast food restaurant at 388 Cameron Rd, between 5th and 6th Avenues.

Tauranga Primary School is located directly behind the site.

Tauranga City Council granted Antares Restaurant Group Limited consent on July 27.

A local tradesman, who did not want to be named, said local builders and trades people were vying for tender to build  and create the new fast food restaurant.

The man has a child at Tauranga Primary School and another one due to begin next year.

He was extremely disappointed to learn a fast food restaurant was going to be built next to a school.

"I've got children at that school and it's less than ideal to have a fast food restaurant right beside a school,'' he said.

"It's going to increase the amount of traffic in the area and that school is split so it's on both 5th and 6th Ave ... so it's not good news for the school community.''

"It's not the healthiest thing to be doing either.''
