Five boys from the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic swapped their masculinity for a few hours of public humiliation on Saturday, in an attempt to raise money for charity.

Christopher Key, Guy Mansell, Matt O'Neal, Scott Julian-Shae and Scott Heginbotham gathered in Mid City Mall and enjoyed the activities of a typical female slumber party to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

The boys dressed in pink, had their nails painted and went through the painful experience of getting their legs waxed by beauty therapists from the College of Beauty Therapy.

After four hours on the street, an initial count signals the boys raised just under $300 - with more money still coming in.

Mr O'Neal was the first in the leg waxing chair and said the experience was "just not right".

"Oh this sucks, it's not nice at all."

Mr Key was next in the chair and said he had "a lot more respect" for the women who waxed their legs.

"Why would girls even do this?" he said.

The boys, radio broadcasting students at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, were asked to host a promotional event for their radio station. The all-male group decided on hosting a female slumber party, which turned into a charity event. "We wanted to do something for the girls and we thought this would be something that would catch people's attention," Mr Key said.

Other radio broadcasting student groups also raised money for charity during their promotional activities. Funds raised went to the SPCA, the Cancer Society and other local charities.
