Bay polytechnic supports Government's tertiary changes

The head of the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is not surprised by the Government's announcement of proposed changes to tertiary education.

Dr Alan Hampton says the polytechnic is supporting Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce's proposed changes and does not see a problem in implementing them.

Mr Joyce's three short-term goals are to ensure qualifications are meaningful, tackle course completion rates, and ensure student support money is not wasted.

He indicated a reduction of 25 per cent in qualifications currently listed with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), a figure Dr Hampton believes is "entirely achievable."
