A Tauranga alarm installer has donated his time, resources and labour to the Tauranga Foodbank to ensure the building is secure after it was broken into at the end of last month.

Lance McCormick, who owns alarm company BeAlarmed, said when he read about the foodbank being burgled he felt he could do something to help.

"After seeing them get ripped off at this time of year, it's a bit of a have really," he said.

Mr McCormick said he went into the foodbank and saw the holes which had been boarded up after each burglary and it was not a good sight. "With it being Christmas time they can't afford to lose any more food," he said.

Other businesses have got on board with BeAlarmed, including Financial Independence who contributed money for materials, Ideal Electrical Suppliers, who provided the cabling, and Watchdog Security Services, who will monitor the alarm for free.

Foodbank secretary Glenn Spedding said it was a great gesture and showed real community spirit.

Mr Spedding said donations of money and food have been coming since their appeal and they also wanted to thank the Oriana Singers who performed a concert to collect food for the foodbank.

At least 12 shopping bags of food and $700 were brought into Tauranga Foodbank yesterday thanks to the Freemasons. additional reporting Lauren Owens
