Adventurous group off to New Guinea

A team of adventurous seniors from the Tauranga Central Baptist Church, all in their 60s or 70s, head to Papua-New Guinea on Friday for what promises to be a major adventure.

Together with five others from throughout New Zealand, they will spend three weeks in the New Guinea Highlands extending and upgrading four classrooms originally built in 1964 for the Christian Leaders' Training College.

The project is the brainchild of Garth and Ruth Morgan who have had a 45 year- plus association with the college that is about to become accredited as an Institute of Higher Education in the country.

It is set in 413 acres in the Wahgi Valley near Banz (an hour's drive east of Mt Hagen) the college, and with a community of more than 600 students, staff and their families.

With its farm, it is 75 per cent self supporting.

It is committed to training families recommended by their churches from Papua-New Guinea and the Solomon Islands in leadership, for their future roles in serving their communities, churches, business enterprises and governments.

The team is due to return on September 28.
