Murray Guy wants specific dog breeds banned

A Tauranga city councillor is pushing a bill to ban all aggressive dogs in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Councillor Murray Guy said dogs that can be identified as having an aggressive nature, full-breeds or cross-breeds, have no place in Tauranga  and should be banned.

He has proposed a bylaw which would make it an offence to be in control of, possession of, or responsible for the presence of "specific dog breeds" within  the boundaries of Tauranga City.

"There are certain breeds that members of our community find threatening and with Tauranga being a Safe City, this should be high on our priority list," he said.

"There is no justification to tolerate this."

Mr Guy said certain dog breeds "clearly pose a risk to their owners, other people in the community and other animals".

He said these animals are not welcome in the community.
